It was October 2013 when we first discovered the biggest sand festival in the world in the Algarve, Portugal. It is full of sand sculptures in fantastic detail.

Obidos is a traditional Portuguese town on the West Coast of Portugal. It's only an hour's drive from Lisbon which makes it a place worth visiting for a day trip. It's a beautifully preserved old town with a hilltop castle all contained within the medieval walls of the city.

Beautiful Alvor in Portugal is our most favourite place to visit in the Algarve. We love the way it has retained its traditional Portuguese charm with its low rise white buildings and cobbled streets that lead down to the harbour.

Costa Nova is only a small town which is still an active fishing village but its charm is the colourful candy-striped wooden buildings of all shapes and sizes which line the main street through the town. These buildings which are like beach huts are known as Palheiros and whilst most are used as holiday homes some are permanent residences. There are also really interesting traditional tiled buildings mixed in.

We got off the tram at Praca do Comercio at the southern edge of the Baxia district and overlooking the River Tagus estuary. This is the city’s main square and is the largest of the 4 squares in Baxia. It’s a very impressive riverside square and is the major hub for the tram network.
