Koblenz, Germany

We changed our minds about heading straight to the Romantic road after looking at our map for the first time.  During our last trip, we met several people, including one very friendly German who recommended several places to visit and highlighted them on a map, so our next stop was Koblenz.

Koblenz was only a one-and-a-half-hour journey.  We found a stellplatz in our German Bord Atlas, but when we arrived, the 5-6 stellplatz pitches were full, so we drove into the campsite.  The price per night was 33 euros, which we really didn’t want to pay, so we stopped and pulled over to check the internet.  Luckily, we found a motorhome stop that was recommended on the Motorhome Facts site, which was also located on the river.  Once parked just outside Koblenz, we had lunch and then rode our bikes into Koblenz.

They seem to cater well to cyclists in Germany, with plenty of cycle paths that are nice and flat.

Koblenz is one of the towns that the river cruise boats stop off at, and once we got level with the town on the river, we had to wait a while because one of the cruise boats was disembarking, and nothing was going to get through the crowds coming off the boat and taking up the whole pathway.

Koblenz is a classically German city with lovely architecture and beautiful flowers in the window boxes.  They had a lovely, big shopping mall, which, unfortunately, we didn’t get to go inside. As Ray had left the locks for the bikes on the bike rack back at the motorhome, we didn’t fancy leaving the bikes outside for anyone to take.

We had a walk down their two main cobbled streets and watched the cable cars over the Rhine, browsed some of the shops and admired the architecture before cycling back to the motorhome for the evening.
