The last of the towns we visited in Bavaria on this Alpine Road trip was Bad Tolz. It’s a pretty little spa town straddling the Isar River. Its lovely old town has attractive frescoed houses and quaint shops. It’s a busy place to be on the weekends when people flock from Munich to enjoy the towns famous, ultramodern swimming complex, Alpine slide and hiking trips along the river.
Our stellplatz (camperstop) was situated right on the river within a 400-metre walk into the town. From the motorhome front window we could watch the river and for the two days we were there we (along with others from the stellplatz) took our lay-back chairs, table, wine and food over to sit on the river bank. It was so relaxing and there was plenty to see as we watched the swans & ducks on the water having the occasional squabble over territories There were plenty of people strolling past and it was nice watching the families picnicking and children splashing about in the water.
As it was a stellplatz and not a campsite, we could only stay 2 nights but we would have definitely stayed longer here. As well as walking along the river and in the town we wandered around some of the local housing imagining living in some of the lovely houses in such a perfect setting. From here we walked across the bridge and through a wooded area that went on and on and opened up every now and then to beautiful countryside. This is definitely a place to come back to.
Lot’s of places in Germany have the word Bad before a place name or in the middle of it ie Wiesbaden. Obviously, this does not mean that the town is bad it actually means Spa and gives the indication that there are healing springs or waters in the town, visited by those who believe in this type of natural cure as a way to improve their health.
In practice, it adds prestige to the place as well indicating that it is a designated spa.
